ALEC Welcoming Committee will rise again–in OKC and Chicago

When we here in SLC launched the ALEC Welcoming Committee, we wanted to create a legacy web presence that could be reused in every community in which ALEC meets.

We’re happy to announce that we’ve made contacts in Oklahoma City and Chicago, the sites of ALEC’s next two meetings, that are interested in carrying on the legacy of resistance.

ALEC will host their spring meeting in OKC May 2-3.

ALEC will host their annual meeting in Chicago August 7-9.

We hope to have folks in those communities up and running with this site, our Facebook site, the Twitter account and more as soon as they’re ready. Unless ALEC is shut down by then, it’s our expectation that they will take the same effort and care to pass on the site to the next communities when the 2014 ALEC meeting locations are announced.

Using the same website to organize resistance to ALEC, we hope, will have several benefits.  A centralized URL used nationally will create a “clearinghouse” effect where information about past demonstrations would be easily catalogued and preserved; foster solidarity between communities of resistance who have protested ALEC; and also improve search engine results by promoting the same URL, rather than a series of URLs for protests in each city, which was the case leading up to the formation of the ALEC Welcoming Committee in January 2011.

Many will join your protest of ALEC but demand only reforms of ALEC, but it’s our expectation that anyone who organizes under the banner of ALEC Welcoming Committee remain committed to demands for complete shut down and dissolution of ALEC–no compromises.

OKC and Chicago: we did everything we could and we believe we strongly won the battle when ALEC came here–they limped out of town with their heads hanging low. It’s up to you now to continue the resistance.  SOLIDARITY FOREVER!

Congratulations!

What a SMASHING success

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Critics to Confront Corporate Greed,
Demand ALEC ‘Bill Mill’ Shutdown.
SALT LAKE CITY, UT  Local and national groups are hammering away at the corporate-dominated American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), demanding an end to legislation which they say benefits corporate interests at the expense of the public.
ALEC brings its annual conference to Salt Lake City July 23-27, 2012 but a vocal opposition will unite against them. The coalition called The ALEC Welcoming Committee is fighting back against ALEC. Members of the coalition include: Occupy Salt Lake City, Peaceful Uprising, Utah Tar Sands Resistance, the Salt Lake Dream Team, iMatter Utah, the League of Women Voters, Move to Amend Salt Lake and others. Over the course of the five days community groups plan rallies, teach-ins, workshops, news conferences, pickets and other actions.
ALEC is funded and dominated by some of the world’s largest corporations including ExxonMobil, Bank of America, BP, Monsanto, Koch Industries, and Pfizer. Local ALEC members include 1-800-Contacts and Comcast. Common Cause contends that ALEC is manipulating the US tax laws. In a recent complaint to the IRS the government watchdog group said: “ALEC is a corporate lobbying group masquerading as a public charity.” Twenty-eight Utah Legislators are also members of ALEC.
The Center for Media and Democracy’s research arm PR Watch calls ALEC a “bill mill. ALEC is responsible for about 1,000 bills a year using a common language, which then are proposed and “flood” multiple state legislatures often during the same session. Bills represent conservative causes which have the effect of eroding and eliminating comprehensive health care; suppressing voter rights; and requiring police to check the immigration status of primarily non-Caucasian citizens, legal immigrants and undocumented workers.
ALEC is also backing laws to eliminate workers’ collective bargaining rights, which leads to lower wages, pensions and health care benefits. The organization was also behind many of the states’ adoption of “Stand Your Ground (Kill at Will)” laws being used in the defense of individuals like George Zimmerman, recently accused of murdering the black teenager Trayvon Martin.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) holds its annual meeting this week, July 23-27 in Salt Lake City to dish out more “pork” through 50 state legislatures to some of the Nation’s largest corporations, but more people are asking why there is no slice of pie for the poor and the middle class. This summer, community activists organized a coalition called the ALEC Welcoming Committee (ALECWC) to expose ALEC’s attacks on workers, immigrants, teachers and voters  during ALEC’s five-day conference in Salt Lake City.  According to the ALECWC’s “Community Invitation,”  “…the ALEC Board of Directors fine dines July 23rd in the confines of Salt Lake’s Grand America Hotel while the people’s plates are once again literally and figuratively coming up empty.

A recent analysis by the Alliance For a Better Utah, a government watch dog group concludes that ALEC’s legislative proposals  “…would tilt the tax code in
favor of wealthy corporations, privatize Medicare and Social Security, lower wages, eliminate employee rights, ship American jobs overseas, and remove protections for American consumers.”

ALEC Welcoming Committee Call to Action!

We the people of Salt Lake City invite all those opposed to the tyranny of the 1% to join us from July 23-28th 2012 in providing a warm welcome for the 39th Annual Meeting of the American Legislative Exchange Council. This annual meeting by ALEC is paid for and attended by corporate sponsors who sit behind closed doors with our elected state legislators. At these meetings laws are created without the voice of the people that will later benefit those same corporate sponsors at the expense of our communities.

ALEC functions as the most influential mechanism by which corporations maintain their dominance over people and policy by occupying our political institutions. ALEC is responsible for thirty nine years worth of oppressive legislation. Model legislation proposed by ALEC and enacted by our elected representatives have destroyed workers rights and strangled free speech. These model policies have driven the privatization of agriculture, education, health care, and the prison industry all at the expense of the ecosystems that sustain us.

We will not allow this systemic corruption to continue. We the people have developed direct democratic communities and processes to challenge the status quo. We call for a local and national convergence of these communities from July 23-28 in Salt Lake City. We remain committed to nonviolence as we provide an open and inclusive space for resistance, rebellion and a diversity of tactics. We the People demand our frustrations be known as we develop solutions together where the voice of the people is heard over the the voice of the corporations. It is by solidarity through struggle that we will find our greatest strength.

With Love,

ALEC Welcoming Committee of Occupy Salt Lake
