When we here in SLC launched the ALEC Welcoming Committee, we wanted to create a legacy web presence that could be reused in every community in which ALEC meets.
We’re happy to announce that we’ve made contacts in Oklahoma City and Chicago, the sites of ALEC’s next two meetings, that are interested in carrying on the legacy of resistance.
ALEC will host their spring meeting in OKC May 2-3.
ALEC will host their annual meeting in Chicago August 7-9.
We hope to have folks in those communities up and running with this site, our Facebook site, the Twitter account and more as soon as they’re ready. Unless ALEC is shut down by then, it’s our expectation that they will take the same effort and care to pass on the site to the next communities when the 2014 ALEC meeting locations are announced.
Using the same website to organize resistance to ALEC, we hope, will have several benefits. A centralized URL used nationally will create a “clearinghouse” effect where information about past demonstrations would be easily catalogued and preserved; foster solidarity between communities of resistance who have protested ALEC; and also improve search engine results by promoting the same URL, rather than a series of URLs for protests in each city, which was the case leading up to the formation of the ALEC Welcoming Committee in January 2011.
Many will join your protest of ALEC but demand only reforms of ALEC, but it’s our expectation that anyone who organizes under the banner of ALEC Welcoming Committee remain committed to demands for complete shut down and dissolution of ALEC–no compromises.
OKC and Chicago: we did everything we could and we believe we strongly won the battle when ALEC came here–they limped out of town with their heads hanging low. It’s up to you now to continue the resistance. SOLIDARITY FOREVER!
